Jewelry Engraving

At J. David Jewelry we laser engrave pieces bought here, at three Tulsa showrooms in Broken Arrow, South Tulsa and Brookside: a date, initials, the line only the two of you know. Tell us the words when you choose the piece, or bring it back once you have found them.

The part nobody else sees

A ring says one thing to the world and another to the person wearing it. The outside is for everyone. The inside of the band is for the two of you.

A date. A pair of initials. Three words from a letter. A line that would mean nothing to anyone else and everything to the one who wears it. Engraving is the smallest thing we do, and it may be the most kept.

What we engrave

We engrave by laser, on pieces bought with us. A laser writes with light, not a cutting tool, so the lettering is fine and even, even on a slender band. Most often it is the inside of a wedding band or an engagement ring.

But it need not be a ring. We can engrave nearly anything: a pendant, a bracelet, the back of a locket. It depends on the piece, so bring it to any showroom and we will look at it with you. There is a variety of fonts to choose from.

What fits

How much fits depends on the ring. A wider band in a larger size has more room; a narrow one has less. A narrow band holds a date or a pair of initials comfortably. A wider one has room for a line.

Shorter is usually better. Fewer words can be set larger, and larger is easier to read ten years on.

Size first, then the words

If a ring may need sizing, size it first. Sizing works the band itself, and it can distort or remove part of an inscription. So if the ring is a surprise and the size is a guess, ask the question first and engrave after. The words will keep.

An old engraving can sometimes be polished away and a new one made, if the band has metal to spare. Sometimes it is part of the piece's story and better left. We will look at it with you.

Come In, or Text Us

Tell Us the Words.

There are two ways to start, and neither is the wrong one. Bring the piece to any of our three Tulsa showrooms and we look at the band and tell you what fits — that is the solid answer, because the piece is in hand. Or text us the words you have in mind, and we’ll do our best to tell you how they would sit.

Bring the words

Tell us when you choose the piece, or come back any time after. Bring the words written down exactly as you want them: the capitals, the punctuation, the way you write the date. Check them twice. Engraving is patient about everything except spelling.

Engraving is often the last touch on a custom design or a wedding band.

Good Questions

The things people actually ask.

Can you engrave the inside of a ring?

Yes. The inside of a wedding band or an engagement ring is where most of our engraving goes, on pieces bought at J. David. We check the band first to be sure there is room for the words to read clearly.

How much can be engraved inside a ring?

It depends on the width of the band, the size of the ring and the lettering. A narrow band holds a date or a pair of initials comfortably, and a wider one has room for a line. We look at your ring and tell you what fits before anything is engraved.

Should a ring be engraved before or after it is sized?

After. Sizing works the band itself and can distort or remove part of an inscription, so settle the size first and engrave once it is final.

Do you engrave jewelry bought somewhere else?

No. Our engraving is for pieces bought with us at J. David Jewelry.

What does engraving cost?

It depends on the piece. Some pieces ordered specially from our designer houses arrive with engraving included at no charge, and we will tell you when yours is one.

Can I choose the lettering?

Yes. We have a variety of fonts to choose from.

Can an old engraving be removed or changed?

Sometimes. If the band has metal to spare, an inscription can be polished away and a new one made. On a thin band it may not be possible, and we will tell you which yours is before anything is touched.

One big request I had for Hayley was to make sure any leftover gold from the ring was returned to me. Not only did she make sure I got the gold, but Scott even turned it into a small pendant!
