At J. David Jewelry our own goldsmiths do setting repair, what the trade calls prong repair, at three Tulsa showrooms, in Broken Arrow, South Tulsa and Brookside: worn tips rebuilt, the points that hold a diamond replaced. A setting wears thin long before a diamond falls, so the looking is free. Bring your ring in and we will check every setting under the loupe with you.
Think of what is in that ring. The evening it was given. The years since. All of it is held in place by four or six points of metal, each smaller than a grain of rice.
They do their work every hour the ring is worn, against pockets and sweaters, countertops and car doors. And they wear, so slowly that no one notices. A point of the crown almost never fails all at once. It thins for years, and then one ordinary afternoon it lets go.
A point that looks flat where it used to be round. One that sits shorter than its neighbors. A ring that has started catching on sweaters, or in your hair. A diamond that turns, clicks or moves when you press it gently with a fingernail.
Any one of these is reason enough. Take the ring off, put it somewhere safe, and bring it to us.
When the tip of a point has worn down but the metal beneath is sound, a goldsmith adds new metal to the tip and shapes it back over the gem. That is retipping. When the point itself is thin, cracked or bent past trusting, it is replaced. And when every point has given what it had, the whole crown that holds the diamond gives way to a new one and the diamond is set again.
Which of these your ring needs is something a goldsmith can only tell with the piece in hand. Some gems cannot take the heat of the work and are lifted out first, then set again after. Either way, the finished points are shaped smooth, so they hold without catching.
There are two ways to start, and neither is the wrong one. Bring the ring to any of our three Tulsa showrooms and we check every setting under the loupe — that is the solid answer, because worn metal shows in the hand and not in a picture. Or text us what you have noticed, and we’ll do our best to tell you what it may need.
A tip rebuilt is small work. A diamond lost is a different day entirely.
Jewelers' trade groups suggest a look every six to twelve months for a ring worn daily, and we agree. Come sooner if anything feels different. It takes a few minutes under the loupe, and the looking costs nothing. If the ring does need work, you have the estimate before you leave, and most repairs are home in two to three weeks.
We look at every setting whenever a piece comes in for a cleaning. How each setting holds its diamond is in Engagement Ring Settings, Explained.
Retipping adds new metal to the worn tip of a point that is otherwise sound. Replacing a point is for one that has grown too thin, cracked or bent to trust. When every point is worn, the whole crown that holds the diamond is replaced and the diamond is set again.
Look for a point that has gone flat, sits shorter than its neighbors or has started catching on sweaters and hair. A diamond that turns or moves when you press it gently is the clearest sign. If you see any of these, take the ring off and bring it in.
Every six to twelve months for a ring worn daily, and right away if a gem moves or a point catches. We check it at no charge whenever you bring the ring to one of our showrooms.
Yes. Most of what comes to our bench was bought somewhere else. Bring it to any of our three showrooms and we will look at it for free.
It depends on how many points need work and how much metal each one needs, so we do not quote from a description. The estimate is free and given on the spot, and nothing starts until you say yes.
Three showrooms across Tulsa, one family since 1994. Bring your questions, or just come and look.

Every heirloom begins with a story. Hear from the families who let us be a part of theirs.
Katelyn helped me resize and refresh my wedding ring. She was knowledgeable, professional, and incredibly sweet. She made the experience easy and enjoyable, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend asking for Katelyn
Had a fantastic experience at J David! Bought an engagement ring last year and a wedding band this year. Maelei and Susan were especially super helpful and patient with us and found us the perfect matches!
One big request I had for Hayley was to make sure any leftover gold from the ring was returned to me. Not only did she make sure I got the gold, but Scott even turned it into a small pendant!
